Qube 2 Metrocentre, Gateshead

This expansion, remodelling and refurbishment of the former Mediterranean Village and adjacent spaces, created a new portion of mall within the centre with 12 new restaurant units, to link with the Yellow Qube and Red Mall.

Intu’s brief was to refresh and reconfigure the former Mediterranean Village to provide an attractive contemporary environment to meet the heightened expectations of the public and the top catering operators who were not previously represented at Metrocentre. The key requirement was to provide the range of larger unit sizes for which there was recognised market demand. This entailed enlarging the floor plate by extending further over the service areas and changing the position and orientation of the mall.

The new mall was designed cost effectively to retain as much existing shell construction as possible, whilst also enabling phased construction to ensure continuity of trading and public access between Yellow Qube and Red Mall at all times
