Queen Margate Drive in central Glasgow is the site of the former BBC Headquarters building at the West End. The site enjoys a wonderfully open location looking towards Glasgow, close to the Botanical Gardens, and facing the River Kelvin to the north. There are three listed buildings on the site including one by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and we designed the redevelopment proposals to incorporate the listed buildings within a hotel on the western part of the site. Four new residential apartment buildings and a small terrace of townhouses sit to the east following the existing townhouse line further east. The apartments sit above underground parking and we carefully designed the pedestrianised central landscaped space to open up views of the listed buildings so could be enjoyed by the public and residents within the development. The sloping topography towards the Kelvin was used to maximise open views from the apartment buildings.
