Caltongate is a complex city centre regeneration project within Edinburgh’s Old Town where CDA were appointed as architects for private and affordable residential buildings and podium parking levels shared by residential and office uses. The private residential buildings were designed using large format concrete panels to the street side and open winter gardens facing courtyards to the rear. The sloping topography of the Waverley Valley enabled the topmost levels to gradually step down from Canongate and we designed the top level apartments to have large terraces as a result. The affordable housing buildings were designed for the Places for People Group in accordance with their detailed brief for the type of tenure envisaged and the mix of apartment sizes.
